Meyba’s yellow away strip of 1982 to 1985 stands among the most charismatic shirts in Barcelona history. The shiny polyester body was cut in the Catalan maker’s roomy “track” silhouette and framed by a fold-over collar with a neat V insert.
A bold vertical stripe split deep red and royal blue ran down the left side, mirroring the club colours against the canary field that had long echoed the senyera. On each shoulder sat repeating blue triangles inside a red tape – the brand’s trademark tape motif – while the stitched “M” patch and full-colour crest were given pride of place without a commercial sponsor. Under the arms Meyba inserted mesh panels for ventilation, a forward-thinking detail.
The shirt debuted in Diego Maradona’s first season at Camp Nou and quickly gained cult status. Under Udo Lattek and, after March, César Luis Menotti, the 1982-83 side finished fourth in La Liga but lifted both the Copa del Rey and the inaugural Copa de la Liga, defeating Real Madrid in each final. Maradona struck eleven league goals and 23 in all competitions, several of them in this luminous change strip that contrasted perfectly with his navy shorts and blue socks.

Twelve months later the same jersey accompanied an eventful campaign shaped by Menotti’s attacking philosophy. Barça climbed to third in the league, won the Supercopa de España against Athletic Club and reached the quarter-finals of both the Cup Winners’ Cup and the domestic cups. Injuries and a lengthy suspension for Maradona limited his impact, yet the away kit still witnessed memorable contributions from Bernd Schuster and Marcos Alonso whose twelve-goal haul topped the club’s Liga chart.
By 1984-85 the shirt had become emblematic of a side on the verge of ending an eleven-year title drought. New manager Terry Venables introduced a disciplined 4-4-2, signed Scottish striker Steve Archibald and watched Barcelona surge to the summit. Wearing yellow whenever clashes demanded, the team lost only twice in thirty-four league outings and finished ten points clear in first place. Archibald’s fifteen league goals were the most by any Blaugrana forward that season, while Bernd Schuster controlled play from midfield in a campaign that restored domestic pre-eminence.

Production of the design ceased in the summer of 1985 as Meyba refreshed the range, but its legacy endures. It is the only Barça kit worn competitively by both Maradona and a title-winning side, and its vibrant palette foreshadowed the more overt senyera strips of later decades. In an era now awash with annual releases, the 1982-85 away shirt remains a timeless reminder of Catalan flair, Meyba ingenuity and the moment Barcelona reclaimed the Spanish crown.
