Mexico 1998 player shirt by ABA Sport believed to have been worn by Villa in the friendly match against Holland played at Pro Player Stadium, Miami on the 24th March 1998.
The two sides had been drawn to face each other in the group stage of the 1998 World Cup and decided to check each other out three months early over in the USA. It did not look good for Mexico when they went 3-0 down inside 20 minutes after a Kluivert brace and a great strike by Wim Jonk.
El Tri recovered in the second half though and were able to give the Dutch something to think about ahead of France 98. Some great work by Blanco eventually ended up in Palencia pulling one back before Garcia Aspe netted a second from the penalty spot. Unfortunately Manuel Lapuente's men were unable to find an equaliser wearing the away version of their superb shirt with the 'Aztec' design. The tough tackling midfield general Villa played the full match and would go on to star at the World Cup as well as 8 other major international competitions in his career, a rock of the Mexico side from 1996-2002.
