It was hard-fought encounter between the two favourites to qualify from the group. Spain edged the first half although John Alridge missed a gilt-edged chance but when Lopez was sent off just before the hour mark it made a draw not a bad result for the hosts.

A star the club during the 'Dream Team' years Goikoetxea made 36 appearances for Spain. La Furia Roja would go on to win the group and seal a place at the 1994 World Cup.
