The English footballing legend Bobby Charlton - Sir Robert Charlton CBE - passed away last month and his significance in world football cannot be overstated.

Earlier this year, this Umbro shirt, worn by Charlton in a 1959 Manchester United friendly against Real Madrid - and carrying a number 10 on the reverse, rather than the 9 he was more famously associated with - sold at auction for a massive £30,000.

An artefact from so soon after the tragic Munich air disaster was bound to pique interest - especially as it was subsequently in the possession of also-departed Hungarian superstar Ferenc Puskás - but it is Charlton’s standing in the game that made it so desirable, as would be the case with anything associated with the great man.

This item was sold by Graham Budd Auctions, a specialist in sporting memorabilia.
