This match-worn Middlesbrough shirt, which recently sold for a whopping £16,000 at auction, is a break from the norm.
In direct contrast to the often multiple-shirts-per-player-per-match approach of today, the piece of the English North-East club’s history here is a rare example of a relic from the last quarter of the 19th century - estimated as being worn between 1886 and 1890 - and features stylings that are generally now only seen in throwback or special-edition releases.
From the beautiful original crest and the white-with-polka-dotted-placket-and-cuffs styling - predating Boro’s modern red-and-white look - this kind of artefact seldom becomes available and this example was unsurprisingly snapped up for a hefty price.
