FCB meets FCB - Exhibition

FC Basel have organised an exhibition at their stadium museum. The “ FCB meets FCB “ exhibition shows how businessman and former player Hans Gamper migrated to Spain before founding FC Barcelona in 1899.

According to legend, Gamper may even have based Barcelona’s half red, half blue team strip on Basel's near identical colours which had been in use since the Swiss club's own founding six years earlier.

“Sadly there is no historical document proving that Barca’s shirts were based on FC Basel’s, but the circumstantial evidence is quite compelling,” Swiss Sport Museum collection leader Hans-Dieter Gerber said.

“The fact that Gamper went to Spain and set up FC Barcelona who started playing with the same distinctive colours he had played in suggests the story is at least credible.”

For those who forgot it… The Only A Game? exhibition opened its doors to the public today as the UEFA-driven project takes up residence in the World Museum Liverpool from 11 October to 1 March.

With admission free, the interactive exhibition invites visitors to plunge into the emotions of football, inspired by a selection of prestigious artefacts, trophies and memorabilia, covering in particular the last 50 years of European football.

Only A Game?, which first showed in Brussels last year, has a wider appeal than just to football fans, however, as it charts the development of the European Community after the Treaty of Rome, in tandem with the growth of the European club competitions.

The football shirt worn by Sir Geoff Hurst in the 1966 World Cup Final will return to Wembley tomorrow thanks to an Oxfordshire businessman.

Property investor Andrew Leslau has fronted a consortium of collectors who recently purchased the match worn football shirt of the world cup 66 hero.

His plans are to take it to the WC 2010 qualifying match against Kazakhstan.

Mr Leslau, of Milton Common, said he hoped the shirt — insured for £1million — would be a talisman for fans and spur the team on to victory.

"This is the most important shirt in English football history - not just the most valuable and most expensive in the world," said Mr Leslau.
