Details
Jun 29 2008

faberge_egg_george_best.jpg

Football Collectors from across the world are expected to go to Manchester when a Fabergé Egg tribute to late Manchester United legend George Best goes up for auction. The egg followed a similar sporting tribute to Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic.

The rare egg will feature at a special sale of football memorabilia and is expected to fetch at least £45,000. Auction organiser David Goldemann said: "Fabergé has only ever made tribute eggs to four Westerners - George Best being one. This is a very rare egg and we are really excited to have it at our auction in Manchester. I think it will attract a lot of interest from the serious collectors."

Peter Carl Fabergé, goldsmith to the Imperial Court of Russia, became renowned for his exquisite series of jewelled Easter eggs, the first commissioned by Alexander III for the Tsarina in 1884. The George best egg was made by his great-grand-daughter Sarah.

Brazil shirts signed by Pele and Juninho, one of Stewart Downing’s England shirts, a pair of Afonso Alves’ match-worn boots and the chance to join Alastair Brownlee when he makes his commentary comeback are just some of the superb prizes being auctioned in aid of two charities.

Boro fans – and football supporters in general – have the chance to snap up a long list of fantastic prizes in the auction, which is designed to raise cash for one of Boro’s chosen charities, Teesside Hospice, and the Lourdes Sick Fund.

The auction will culminate in a gala dinner at the Riverside Stadium on June 13 when Alastair Brownlee and Boro legend Craig Hignett will entertain 200 guests, who will then dance the night away to the sounds of top local band The Beer Pigs.

Several of the items are open to advance bids from those unable to attend the event.

They include a Brazil shirt signed by the great Pele and another signed by Boro legend and World Cup winner Juninho.

Also open for bids is a pair of signed boots worn in Premier League action by Boro’s new Brazilian hotshot Afonso Alves, a 1998-99 Boro away shirt signed by Paul Gascoigne, the new Boro home shirt signed by the players and a football signed by Rangers’ UEFA Cup final squad.

Police appeal for stolen FA Cup medal info

Details
May 20 2008

portsmouth-medals-stolen.jpg

Police are appealing for information following the teft of Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson and team-mate Jamie Ashdown FA Cup winners' medals which were stolen in the aftermath of the club's victory celebrations

Both Fa Cup 2008 winners were the victims of the thefts which were discovered when the players returned to their hotel in Windsor, west of London, following Sunday's victory parade in Portsmouth. Former Chelsea player Johnson, who played the full 90 minutes in Portsmouth's 1-0 win over Cardiff City, said his medal had been taken from his washbag.

"I'm so disappointed, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that someone's going to give it back," he told the Portsmouth Website

Ashdown, who did not play in the final, said his medal had been taken from inside a jacket pocket.

Peter Storrie, the club's chief executive, said the incident had put a dampener on the club's first FA Cup final success since 1939.

"If someone has taken these medals they have deprived our players of a lifelong dream," he said.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the medals had been reported stolen on Monday and were carrying out investigations.

Tycoons buy football shirts collection for GBP 50,000

 4-club--country.jpg

To help commemorate the centenary of the Professional footballers’ Association (PFA) and to raise funds for the "One goal, One million" charity, 4 Club & Country have produced a unique set of framed historical shirts depicting each and every winner of the PFA’S "player of the year" award.

The shirts were created to celebrate the centenary of the PFA (Professional Footballers' Association). They are a veritable who's who of English football from the past three-and-a-half decades, from Norman Hunter - the first winner of the PFA award in 1974 - through to Cristiano Ronaldo who won the award in 2007.  Each shirt is split in two to show both the club and national colours of each star.

The set was auctioned at the glamorous PFA annual awards dinner in Manchester to raise money for the Manchester Children's Hospital. The property tycoons Patric and James Cassidy have outbid the ex-England boss Sven Goran Eriksson for the most desirable collection of sports memorabilia in the world - 34 shirts signed by many of the greatest names ever to grace English football.

The shirts - one for each of the 34 winners of the Players' Player of the Year Award - attracted hundreds of bids from wealthy collectors at a charity auction in Manchester. The brothers, who made their fortune in building and property development, bagged the shirts for a whopping £50,000, but only after beating off fierce competition from Sven.

The sports-mad brothers - sponsors of the Sky Blues and the Blaze ice-hockey team among others - plan to take the shirts on a world tour to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.
